(NaturalNews) I’m absolutely shocked at how many people don’t investigate what’s really in the products they swallow. When something is sold as an herb, vitamin, superfood or supplement, they think it’s automatically safe. And while the natural products industry has a truly remarkable safety record — especially in contrast to the massive number of deaths caused by pharmaceuticals — it still suffers from a lot of hidden toxins that are routinely used throughout the industry.

I know this because I’ve been an investigative journalist and activist in the natural health industry for over a decade. Natural News is arguably the most-read natural health news website in the world, reaching millions of readers a month. I’ve walked the floors of countless trade shows, conducted hundreds of interviews and spent tens of thousands of dollars on laboratory tests to determine what’s in these products. On top of that, I’m deep into organic product formulations and certified organic food production, serving as the supervisor of a USDA-certified organic food production and packing facility.

When I look around the natural products industry, I see examples of super honest, high-integrity companies like Nature’s Path and Dr. Bronner’s. I also see an alarming number of cheats, crooks and charlatans who are only involved in the industry to profit from the explosion of interest in health supplements. In truth, some nutritional products are downright dangerous to your health. My role as a journalist and activist is to help you tell the difference between products that are GOOD for you vs. products that might actually be toxic. Because ultimately, I want you to be healthy, vibrant, intelligent and active. I want you to enjoy life and improve the quality of your life.

Be prepared to be shocked in reading what follows. After reviewing this list, you will probably throw out quite a few products in your refrigerator and pantry. Very few people are willing to tell you the truth revealed here, so some of this may come as a complete shock (see #1 and #2, below).

Let’s start out with the big one first: If you pick up a natural product and the ingredients list says “maltodextrin,” chances are very high that the maltodextrin in the product is derived from Monsanto’s GM corn.

Virtually all the maltodextrin used throughout the natural products industry is genetically modified. Products that are certified USDA organic, however, are not using GMO maltodextrin.

The non-GMO, non-corn replacement for maltodextrin derived from GM corn is tapioca maltodextrin, and you’ll find tapioca starch / maltodextrin in many certified organic, non-GMO products. Corn maltodextrin should be avoided unless it’s certified USDA organic. Look for tapioca maltodextrin instead (or no maltodextrin at all).

Here’s another whopper that’s sure to open some eyes: Nearly all the “vitamin C” sold in vitamins across America right now is derived from GMO corn.

This means that many of the supplements sold at Whole Foods, the vitamins sold on Amazon.com, the pills at your local pharmacy, and especially the products at the grocery store are (nearly) all routinely made with genetically modified vitamin C. It’s typically called “ascorbic acid,” and nearly 100% of the ascorbic acid used in the natural products industry is derived from GMOs.

Sourcing non-GMO vitamin C requires you to go outside the United States. There is no existing supply chain of certified organic, non-GMO ascorbic acid available anywhere in America (at least not to my knowledge). You can’t even run batches of non-GMO ascorbic acid production in the USA because all the facilities are contaminated with residues of GM corn.

Rest assured that all those cheap “vitamin C” pills sold at retail are derived from genetically modified corn.

Nearly 100% of the “natural” soy proteins sold in the USA are extracted in China using a hexane extraction method. Anything from China should be double checked for metals content just to make sure it’s all clean. This is true across the board for all food products from China, not just brown rice protein. We have consistently found nutritional products from China to be contaminated with worrisome levels of metals, which is why I personally won’t put my brand name on anything from China other than a few exceptions that are well-tested such as goji berries (grown in the Himalayas). The Axiom company says their brown rice protein tests completely clean, but until I run those tests myself, I can’t say for sure whether I concur with the claims.

What the industry really needs right now is a U.S. manufacturer of brown rice protein, for which a multi-million dollar market already exists. If Axiom would find a certified organic U.S. grower for its brown rice protein, the company would receive a huge endorsement from Natural News and probably find a whole new wave of demand from consumers who want U.S. grown products. Texas, by the way, produces a lot of organic brown rice. Surely there must be a way to extract the protein in America and not have to go all the way to China to find this.

On the issue of soy protein, no one disputes the fact that it’s routinely extracted with hexane. Here’s a list of many of the protein bar brands currently using soy protein:

Hexane is a highly explosive chemical. It is not only extremely hazardous to the environment, there may also be trace amounts of hexane left remaining in the resulting protein products. My understanding is that hexane extraction is not allowed in certified organic proteins, so if you have a choice, go for certified organic instead of just “natural” (which means nothing anyway).

Natural News helped expose high aluminum levels (over 1200ppm) in a popular detox liquid, causing the main U.S. distributor to issue a “recall” notice and provide over $1 million in refunds to customers.

Buyer beware when it comes to metals in detox products that claim seemingly magical results.

China is the most polluted nation on the planet (by far), yet many fruits, vegetables and herbs are grown in China and exported to North America for use in natural products.

High levels of lead and arsenic are routinely found in various food, supplement and herbal products from China. I’m not concerned about 1ppm or lower, by the way, of heavy metals like lead and mercury. Even aluminum isn’t necessarily a problem when found organically grown inside foods that test at higher levels such as 150ppm. But when lead, arsenic, mercury and cadmium get to high saturation levels (or are present in inorganic forms), it makes the products potentially a source of heavy metals poisoning for consumers.

Astonishingly, many of the small and medium-sized companies that import and retail products from China conduct no metals testing whatsoever. I know this as a fact because I’ve talked to people doing this.

For the record, everything packed under my own brand name (Health Ranger Select) and sold at the Natural News Store is independently tested by us to ensure full product safety and regulatory compliance.

Would you eat iron filings and call it nutrition? The majority of people don’t know that most of the cheap vitamins sold today are made with iron filings. “Scrap metal,” almost.

The calcium found in cheap vitamins is often just ground-up seashells, and magnesium is often sold as cheap magnesium oxide which may be completely useless to your body’s cells. If you’re buying mineral supplements, you may be wasting your money unless the minerals are in the right form: Magnesium orotate or malate, for example.

When it comes to mineral supplements, you’ll often find trace levels of scary things like barium and lead in liquid supplements, but these are typically at such low levels (ppb) that they are no real concern. But the No. 1 best source for all minerals is, not surprisingly, fresh plants. If you really want to boost your minerals, feed ’em to sprouts or garden plants, then eat or juice those plants. Your body wants “organic” minerals from plants, not inorganic minerals from rocks.

The Cornucopia Institute, a highly-effective food activism group that we’ve long supported, recently published a warning about carrageenan in foods. Cornucopia says carrageenan is linked to “gastrointestinal inflammation, including higher rates of colon cancer, in laboratory animals.”

It goes on to report:

Given its effect on gastrointestinal inflammation, Cornucopia urges anyone suffering from gastrointestinal symptoms (irritable bowel syndrome/IBS, spastic colon, inflammatory bowel disease, chronic diarrhea, etc.) to consider completely eliminating carrageenan from the diet to determine if carrageenan was a factor in causing the symptoms.

Personally, I have never had any problem with carrageenan, and given that it’s derived from seaweed, I also didn’t mind the source. I actually consume quite a lot of carrageenan in Blue Diamond almond milk, which I drink when I’m too busy to make my own raw almond milk. And I’ve never had a problem with it whatsoever. So from my personal experience, I don’t see carrageenan as a worrisome ingredient, but I do understand that some people experience it differently, and it may be troublesome for people whose digestive systems are more sensitive than my own.

For the record, I definitely don’t consider carrageenan to be anywhere near as worrisome as, say, aspartame, GMOs or MSG.

Acrylamides are cancer-causing chemicals produced during the cooking of carbohydrates. Fried snack chips, for example, contain acrylamides. They don’t have to be listed on labels because they are technically not “ingredients.” They are chemicals produced during cooking or frying. Consuming acrylamides increases kidney cancer risk by 59 percent.

The FDA has published an extensive reference guide on acrylamide levels in foods, revealing that french fries have the highest levels of all. But they are also present in prune juice and even breakfast cereals.

A bag of organic snack chips can have just as many acrylamides as a bag of conventional snack chips. This is why fried snack chips should be eaten only sparingly, or never at all. I’m guilty of eating some of these chips myself from time to time, but I limit the quantity and make sure I’m taking chlorella or other superfoods at the same time to counteract the acrylamides.

Interestingly, it turns out that vitamin C blocks acrylamides from causing damage to your body. But if your vitamin C is from a GMO source (see above), you may want to rethink that strategy. Natural citrus juice, rose hips or even camu camu berry powder is a much better choice of natural, full-spectrum vitamin C.

If you eat fried foods of any kind, make sure you ingest a lot of vitamin C, astaxanthin and chlorella before and after your meal or snack.

Hidden MSG is a huge issue across the natural products industry. Pick up almost any veggie burger, and you’ll find it’s made with yeast extract, a hidden form of MSG (monosodium glutamate).

Yeast extract is unbelievably prevalent in the food industry because it looks nicer on the label than “MSG.” Most people are trained to avoid MSG, but yeast extract slips by, so food manufacturers put it into canned soups, dip mixes, snack chips, microwave dinners and especially in vegetarian products, many of which are so loaded with chemicals and additives that I won’t dare touch them. Just because a food says “vegetarian” doesn’t mean it’s healthy.

Hidden MSG is also labeled as “autolyzed yeast extract” or “torula yeast” or even “hydrolyzed vegetable protein.”

Green tea is famous for being contaminated with high levels of fluoride. This is frustrating, because green tea is phenomenally good for your health. It has been proven to lower “bad” cholesterol levels, and it may even help prevent cancer and neurological disorders. It’s probably one of the healthiest beverages you can ever drink.

The tea plant that produces green tea just happens to uptake a huge amount of fluoride from the soils. So when there’s fluoride present in those soils, the green tea will have a surprisingly high concentration, sometimes as much as 25ppm.

While this fluoride in green tea might not be a health hazard all by itself, the governments of the world seem insistent on pumping even more synthetic, chemical fluoride into the water supplies, thereby creating a high risk for fluorosis. Adding green tea to the fluoride consumption you might experience from tap water is a recipe for disaster: brittle bones, discoloration of teeth and even cancer.

Finally, there’s one more secret you need to know about. Most importers, packers, vendors and retailers of natural products foolishly trust the lab results provided by the manufacturers and exporters!

So a typical U.S. company that sells, for example, pomegranate powder on the internet may never conduct their own tests for lead, mercury, cadmium, arsenic and aluminum. They will simply take the lab tests provided by the manufacturer and consider those to be absolute fact!

This is extraordinarily foolish. Growers and exporters routinely lie about their lab tests in order to pull the wool over the eyes of importers, formulators and retailers. The lab tests are easily faked or simply bought off in their home country. Contaminated products can be easily sold and exported because the FDA doesn’t routinely check imported raw materials for heavy metals contamination.

On the good news side, I do know for a fact that all the higher-end retailers such as Natural News, Mercola, Gary Null, etc., all routinely test their raw materials for contaminants. I’m pretty sure Gaia herbs (www.GaiaHerbs.com) routinely tests all their batches, and I know that VitaCost, before it changed hands a few years ago, was running their own lab to test raw materials on-site (for their in-house formulations). But I also know of smaller retailers who absolutely do not test anything and are far more interested in moving boxes than knowing what’s really in them. I also know that some operations are claiming to sell “organic” products even though they do not have any kind of organic certification, and that’s an irresponsible practice that should be rectified. (Look for the USDA organic logo when you buy “organic” products. If they don’t have the logo, they aren’t really organic.)

So once again, buyer beware. You need to be asking for lab test results on anything from China, and it’s good to ask for them on just about everything else as well. For our part, Natural News Store is already in the process of building a mechanism where we can post lab results for all the batches we import, pack and retail. We reject anything with high levels of metals, which is why it took us so many months to secure a really clean source of chlorella.

#7) Carrageenan?

The Cornucopia Institute, a highly-effective food activism group that we’ve long supported, recently published a warning about carrageenan in foods. Cornucopia says carrageenan is linked to “gastrointestinal inflammation, including higher rates of colon cancer, in laboratory animals.”

It goes on to report:

Given its effect on gastrointestinal inflammation, Cornucopia urges anyone suffering from gastrointestinal symptoms (irritable bowel syndrome/IBS, spastic colon, inflammatory bowel disease, chronic diarrhea, etc.) to consider completely eliminating carrageenan from the diet to determine if carrageenan was a factor in causing the symptoms.

Personally, I have never had any problem with carrageenan, and given that it’s derived from seaweed, I also didn’t mind the source. I actually consume quite a lot of carrageenan in Blue Diamond almond milk, which I drink when I’m too busy to make my own raw almond milk. And I’ve never had a problem with it whatsoever. So from my personal experience, I don’t see carrageenan as a worrisome ingredient, but I do understand that some people experience it differently, and it may be troublesome for people whose digestive systems are more sensitive than my own.

For the record, I definitely don’t consider carrageenan to be anywhere near as worrisome as, say, aspartame, GMOs or MSG.

#8) Acrylamides

Acrylamides are cancer-causing chemicals produced during the cooking of carbohydrates. Fried snack chips, for example, contain acrylamides. They don’t have to be listed on labels because they are technically not “ingredients.” They are chemicals produced during cooking or frying. Consuming acrylamides increases kidney cancer risk by 59 percent.

The FDA has published an extensive reference guide on acrylamide levels in foods, revealing that french fries have the highest levels of all. But they are also present in prune juice and even breakfast cereals.

A bag of organic snack chips can have just as many acrylamides as a bag of conventional snack chips. This is why fried snack chips should be eaten only sparingly, or never at all. Make sure you’re taking chlorella or other superfoods at the same time to counteract the acrylamides if you eat these.

Interestingly, it turns out that vitamin C blocks acrylamides from causing damage to your body. But if your vitamin C is from a GMO source (see above), you may want to rethink that strategy. Natural citrus juice, rose hips or even camu camu berry powder is a much better choice of natural, full-spectrum vitamin C.

If you eat fried foods of any kind, make sure you ingest a lot of vitamin C, astaxanthin and chlorella before and after your meal or snack.

#9) Hidden MSG / yeast extract

Hidden MSG is a huge issue across the natural products industry. Pick up almost any veggie burger, and you’ll find it’s made with yeast extract, a hidden form of MSG (monosodium glutamate).

Yeast extract is unbelievably prevalent in the food industry because it looks nicer on the label than “MSG.” Most people are trained to avoid MSG, but yeast extract slips by, so food manufacturers put it into canned soups, dip mixes, snack chips, microwave dinners and especially in vegetarian products, many of which are so loaded with chemicals and additives that I won’t dare touch them. Just because a food says “vegetarian” doesn’t mean it’s healthy.

Hidden MSG is also labeled as “autolyzed yeast extract” or “torula yeast” or even “hydrolyzed vegetable protein.”

#10) Fluoride in green tea

Green tea is famous for being contaminated with high levels of fluoride. This is frustrating, because green tea is phenomenally good for your health. It has been proven to lower “bad” cholesterol levels, and it may even help prevent cancer and neurological disorders. It’s probably one of the healthiest beverages you can ever drink.

The tea plant that produces green tea just happens to uptake a huge amount of fluoride from the soils. So when there’s fluoride present in those soils, the green tea will have a surprisingly high concentration, sometimes as much as 25ppm.

While this fluoride in green tea might not be a health hazard all by itself, the governments of the world seem insistent on pumping even more synthetic, chemical fluoride into the water supplies, thereby creating a high risk for fluorosis. Adding green tea to the fluoride consumption you might experience from tap water is a recipe for disaster: brittle bones, discoloration of teeth and even cancer.

The final “dirty little secret” of the natural products industry

Finally, there’s one more secret you need to know about. Most importers, packers, vendors and retailers of natural products foolishly trust the lab results provided by the manufacturers and exporters!

So a typical U.S. company that sells, for example, pomegranate powder on the internet may never conduct their own tests for lead, mercury, cadmium, arsenic and aluminum. They will simply take the lab tests provided by the manufacturer and consider those to be absolute fact!

This is extraordinarily foolish. Growers and exporters routinely lie about their lab tests in order to pull the wool over the eyes of importers, formulators and retailers. The lab tests are easily faked or simply bought off in their home country. Contaminated products can be easily sold and exported because the FDA doesn’t routinely check imported raw materials for heavy metals contamination.

Some operations are claiming to sell “organic” products even though they do not have any kind of organic certification, and that’s an irresponsible practice that should be rectified. (Look for the USDA organic logo when you buy “organic” products. If they don’t have the logo, they aren’t really organic.)

So once again, buyer beware. You need to be asking for lab test results on anything from China, and it’s good to ask for them on just about everything else as well.

(Natural News) Over the past several years, liberals have constantly assured the American people that even though they support the idea of stricter gun laws, they are not out to take away anyone’s legally owned firearms. But liberals lie every chance that they get, so it really shouldn’t come as a surprise that many of them are now starting to walk back on their promise.

Recently, the Honolulu Police Department in Hawaii has sent a series of letters to residents who use medical marijuana, informing them that they are disqualified from owning firearms, even if they were obtained legally and in compliance with state and federal law. If the medical marijuana users refuse to turn over their firearms, then presumably, they will face state-sanctioned violence until the guns are removed.

“This letter is to inform you that under the provisions of the Hawaii Revised Statutes (HRS), Section 134-7(a) you are disqualified from firearms ownership, possession, or controlling firearms. Your medical marijuana use disqualifies you from ownership of firearms and ammunition,” the letter reads. It goes on to say that residents who use medical marijuana “have 30 days upon receipt of this letter to voluntarily surrender your firearms, permit and ammunition to the Honolulu Police Department (HPD) or otherwise transfer ownership.”

The letter then informs medical marijuana users that they must obtain a clearance letter from a medical doctor if they wish to purchase any firearms or ammunition in the future. (Related: Gun control is incredibly popular among people who live under tyranny and oppression – don’t they get it?)

The first question that we have to ask ourselves it his: Where are all the liberals speaking out against this? Right now, every single leftist within Washington D.C. and the mainstream media who has ever uttered the words “we are not out to take away anyone’s guns” should be out on the frontlines condemning Hawaii for this lawless and blatantly unconstitutional act. But they’re not because – surprise! – they were never serious about rejecting the idea of gun confiscation in the first place.

Last month, The Boston Globe published a piece titled “Hand Over Your Weapons,” which argued that in order to minimize the number of mass shootings that occur in the United States, lawmakers may have to start considering gun confiscation from law abiding citizens.

After arguing that the gun control proposals currently on the table may not go far enough, The Boston Globe piece stated: “In other words, the proposals aren’t just difficult to enact in the current political climate; their practical effects would also be quite limited. On occasion, though, Democrats will make oblique reference to a more sweeping policy change: seizing a huge number of weapons from law-abiding citizens.”

So in other words, liberals are committed to the idea that “we can’t just go around knocking on doors and deporting illegal aliens,” but at the same time, going door-to-door and confiscating firearms is completely appropriate and entirely possible. They don’t even make any sense, they are obviously unhinged, and yet they think that they have the authority to tell the American people what’s best for themselves and their families. That is an incredibly dangerous combination.

Whether it happens in Hawaii or elsewhere, if the liberal Democrats really are serious about confiscating firearms from those who have legally obtained them, then they will be met with an incredible amount of resistance; in fact, gun confiscation could even potentially lead to civil war. The American people are committed to defending their Second Amendment rights, and no matter what laws are passed or what ideas are proposed, they will not lay down their arms without a fight.

Whether it’s a genetically engineered (GE) seed, or a fruit or vegetable that they sprayed with their highly toxic pesticides and herbicides, they have spent billions of dollars lying about the safety of their products. Take, for example, the new cantaloupe they conjured up for Walmart stores called the “Sweet Spark,” which the company claims to be “40% sweeter than Walmart’s current winter cantaloupe,” as reported by ThePennyHoarder.com.But, why?

Shawn Baldwin, Walmart’s senior vice president of produce and global food sourcing, says customers might often skip over the cantaloupes that Walmart sells in the winter because while they may “look good” they probably “taste like a piece of wood.” Well, gee. Maybe, that because cantaloupe is a summer fruit that you’re not supposed to eat in the winter. But we’ve been taught to demand — and expect — whatever we want, when we want it regardless of it being in season or not.

This Sweet Spark cantaloupe isn’t GE; it’s done by cross-breeding, another method that Monsanto uses. It is a more natural technique that farmers have been using for years to enhance their crop yields. Monsanto has crafted a few other vegetables using this method — an EverMild onion, Bellafina bell peppers and Beneforte broccoli — to name a few. And while this process is “natural” it is still not widely accepted as safe, and it is certainly not organic.

This is just the latest in a long list of wrongdoings by this mega-corporation. Let’s take a brief look at the history of Monsanto, a company that’s about to merge with Bayer and “will control a third of the world’s herbicide market,” according to Global Network Perspectives.  And don’t forget about those 7676 seed patents that Monsanto owns and the glyphosate that the state of California has finally decided is carcinogenic and will be banned, reports Reuters.

Monsanto’s Dark History

Looking back on the last several decades of Monsanto’s history, it is evident that they have enjoyed quite a “chemical romance,” according to EarthJustice.org. They began in 1901 with the production of saccharin, a dangerous artificial sweetener. They also had a hand in the production of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), which is a poisonous chemical pollutant, the herbicide 2-4 D, which was later used in Agent Orange, and DDT. Rachel Carson’s book Silent Spring, is prescient and heart rendering tale of the disastrous consequences of DDT which is now banned, along with PCBs.

It was in 1980 that the United States Supreme Court allowed the patenting of life in the case titled Diamond V.Chakrabarty. This opened the door to the “ownership” and the genetic engineering of seeds, which Monsanto was keen to benefit from. They recruited a team of scientists — called “molecular biologists” — who were determined to unlock the secrets of DNA and genetic manipulation.

Their first GE product was called Posilac, developed in 1994. This was sold to farmers to inject into dairy cows so they would produce more milk. Scientists took a bovine growth hormone gene, mixed it with e coli and created a GE bovine growth hormone rBGH, also called rbST.
Monsanto’s Media Obstruction Begins

Early warnings that injections of Posilac, also known as bovine growth hormone, could cause mastitis or lameness were quickly dismissed by the FDA, as was the possibility that this GE milk could be implicated in human cancer. Investigations about this controversy were shut down completely when two reporters, Jane Akre and Steve Wilson of WTVT in Tampa, Florida, did indeed discover a cancer link. This incident was the beginning of the end for any possibility the American people had of discovering the dangers of GE food products on mainstream media.

So, let’s get back to those millions of reasons to stay away from Monsanto products. One reason is that Monsanto has spent years lying to the public and hiding any negative information about its products. Another is the fact that so many of its products, like Walmart’s new Sweet Spark cantaloupe, have not been proven safe for consumption.

But possibly the most important reason is the millions upon millions of people, animals and organisms that have been brutally assaulted, and in some cases have died, because of Monsanto’s toxic chemicals and the potential destruction of the food supply itself.

(Natural News) Scientists continue to genetically engineer plants that are becoming less and less like anything that nature ever intended, and in the process, many of them are overlooking some very useful natural alternatives.

One such solution was recently discovered by researchers at Japan’s RIKEN Center for Sustainable Resource Science (CSRS). After studying a new biological pathway that is activated in plants during droughts, they found that they could give plants a higher tolerance for drought simply by growing them in vinegar.

The study, which is published in Nature Plants, was led by Jong-Myong Kim and Motoaki Seki. The researchers looked into the mutation in the plant enzyme HDA6 to determine the mechanisms behind its protective effect on plants in drought conditions.

They found that the biological pathway that is activated in these plants produces acetate, which also happens to be the main component of vinegar. They discovered that the HDA6 enzyme essentially functions like a switch controlling which metabolic pathway is active. While the plants use sugar for energy under normal circumstances, they switch to the pathway that produces acetate during droughts.

They also found a direct correlation between the acetate levels the plants produced in drought conditions and their survival rate. This led them to reason that a plant that has high amounts of acetate would be better equipped to withstand a drought.

They then tested this hypothesis by treating some Arabidopsis plants with acetic acid and others with water or other organic acids and growing them in drought conditions to compare the results. The plant is a close relative of cabbage, kale, and cauliflower and is often used in experiments because of how readily it displays changes.

After two weeks, 70 percent of the plants that were treated with the acetic acid survived; nearly all of the other plants had died. The other acids that were used unsuccessfully included hydrochloric acid, butyric acid, formic acid, citric acid and lactic acid.

Other plants showed similar results when grown in vinegar

After mapping the signaling pathway of the HDA6 switch, the researchers discovered that it is conserved in many other plant species as well. The same experiment showed increased drought tolerance in maize, wheat and rice when they were grown using acetic acid. They found that the optimum concentration was 40 parts of water to one part of vinegar.

This simple technique eliminates the need for transgenic technologies, which means it is not only safer but also much easier to apply around the world. Kim said: “We expect that external application of acetate to plants will be a useful, simple, and less expensive way to enhance drought tolerance in a variety of plants.”

Further research is expected into the consequences the vinegar could have on the plant’s overall health. For example, the acetate response was connected to the way the plants used jasmonic acid, which they produce to defend themselves against fungus and insects. Additional studies will likely explore this link further to ensure there are no ill effects.

A promising solution

Should this turn out to be as promising as it appears, farmers could have a very valuable ally in vinegar when it comes to protecting crops from drought. It is an inexpensive and safe solution, and it is hoped that larger-scale studies with other plants will yield similar results.

Vinegar can also be used as a natural and eco-friendly way to kill weeds. It must be applied only to the weeds that are being targeted, and it should be done on a sunny day as sunlight activates the vinegar. While all types will get the job done, white vinegar is the most popular choice because it is the most inexpensive.

Given its ability to help plants survive drought in low concentrations and to kill weeds in higher concentrations, vinegar could well prove to be an indispensable item for every gardener and farmer to keep on hand.

The American Heart Association has just issued some curious advice to cardiologists, saying that people should stop consuming butter and replace it with vegetable oils instead. While it’s not surprising to see a group with strong ties to Big Pharma promoting such careless advice, it is very concerning to think of the potential effects it could have on public health if it is followed.

The AHA has long gone after healthy fats, and this time it even went so far as to say that coconut oil is bad for your heart. They would say that, of course, because eating these healthy foods keeps people from needing the prescription drugs made by the firms that support the group.

Their irresponsible stance has been drawing criticism from doctors with a more holistic viewpoint, some of whom have said this advice is downright dangerous. The AHA is suggesting that people eat polyunsaturated fats instead, like those found in vegetable oils and spreads.

The problem is that polyunsaturated fats like corn oil and canola oil pose their own set of risks. They promote inflammation, which can lead to cancer, and slow the metabolism. If it’s not enough to make you start running in the opposite direction to hear that nearly all canola oil is GMO, consider the fact that it suppresses thyroid function and immunity and needs extra processing in your body because it contains toxins. Yet they want us to believe that a chemical that was not put on this Earth for human consumption is really so much better for us than natural butter that came from a cow?

Meanwhile, corn oil is so bad that even some food manufacturers, who are not usually known for placing a high priority on healthy ingredients, are eschewing it and other GMO oils like soy and canola.

Most people know that olive oil is one of the healthiest oils out there and that it has a number of health benefits, particularly organic extra virgin olive oil, but the mixed message here about other oils has done nothing but leave people confused about what they should be eating and what is healthy.

How does the AHA benefit from publicizing bad advice?

The AHA gets funding from Big Pharma and its livelihood comes from – you guessed it – people having heart problems. The heart attack industry is very profitable, so it’s just smart business from their point of view to avoid promoting anything that could give them fewer clients and cut into their profits.

Statins, which are said to lower the risk of heart problems, are widely prescribed and account for a significant portion of the country’s prescription drug spending. They’ve been linked to all sorts of health problems, from nerve and memory issues to liver problems and muscle pain, and yet the FDA says that people should not be afraid to take them. The heart attack industry has a lot of powerful friends, it seems.

Osteopathic doctor Jack Wolfson was quick to criticize the AHA for its attack on saturated fat. In commentary published on Natural News, he called the AHA a lobbyist group that collects almost a billion dollars each year in exchange for promoting the agendas of Big Agriculture and Big Pharma.

He called attention to an American Journal of Clinical Nutrition study of half a million people that found no connection between saturated fat and coronary disease in 2010. Six years later, the same journal published a study that found that saturated fat reduces cardiac risks. He also pointed out that some foods that contain saturated fats like butter also contain other harmful ingredients, like the refined carbs and sugar in prepackaged desserts, and this could have made it a convenient scapegoat.

When will people wake up to the fact that many of these groups do not have our best interests at heart?

Mint for the Ants

Ants don’t like mint. As such, you can drop a few tea bags of mint near those areas in your home where the ants just love parading! Ensure that different areas in your home are kept clean, most especially the kitchen. Besides mint, you can also sprinkle some cucumber peels in the areas of attraction and spray soapy water on them to keep them away.


Tannic acid for the Dust Mites

You can sprinkle tannic acid in dust problem areas to help neutralize the allergens in dust mites and animal dander. Since dust mites can be found anywhere in the home, regular cleaning or vacuuming should be done. You should clean or vacuum beds, furniture, stuffed animals or book shelves. Last but not least, steer clear of humidifiers since they help attract dust mites-they have a special love for humidity and warmth.

Catnip for the mosquitoes

Catnip does help repel mosquitoes, so you need to plant some in your garden. If catnip is not your thing, you can also plant citronella grass, lemon balm, marigolds or rosemary. Besides plants, you need to remove any standing water sources by your home. You also need to ensure that you shut your doors in the early morning or early evening hours to help block their entrance to your home.

Sweet Basil for the flies

You can repel flies and mosquitoes with sweet basil. Other herbs that can repel flies include bay leave, crushed mint, eucalyptus and cloves. You can plant sachets of these around your home.
Peppermint for the spiders

Spiders have a special dislike for peppermint so keep a spray bottle handy. Other repellants include a mixture of vinegar and coconut oil, a mixture of citrus such as lime, lemon, wild orange and tangerine.


Diatomaceous earth for cockroaches

Having a clean home should keep away cockroaches among other pests. Sprinkle Diatomaceous earth in areas that attract cockroaches in your home. Keep water away during this time as they will be actively looking for it. The tiny particles from the Diatomaceous earth should kill most roaches within two weeks or within 48 hours. You can also repel roaches with catnip, a spray of soapy water, garlic and bay leaves. In addition, sprinkle some boric acid on top of kitchen cabinets and keep the acid away from pets and children. You can also trap roaches by soaking bread in beer and placing it in an empty can then storing the can in the area where most roaches tend to appear.


Citrus for the fleas

In case you have pets, fleas are inevitable. Citrus are a natural flea repellant to use in your home. You can soak a sliced piece of lemon in a cup of boiling water, let it soak for the night and proceed to sponge the mixture on your dog in order to kill the fleas .However, you should not apply citrus oil on cats. Bathing your pets frequently will also help eliminate or reduce fleas. In addition, sprinkle diatomaceous earth on your dog or in places where fleas are most present.

I don’t know about you but fruit flies drive me bonkers every summer. We are farmers and love our fresh produce, but unfortunately when the tomatoes are riping on the shelf they tend to bring in these nagging pest. Fruit also brings them around, especially if they are in the ripe stage.

Many people would resort to chemical sprays, which are a big NO NO in our home. My sister told me about something she tried and Bingo, it works like a charm.

Pour about 1/4 cup Apple cider vinegar in a small dish that will be up and away from getting bumped or knocked over by pets or little ones. In this dish pour in a tiny amount of Dawn dishwashing liquid. 

Check the body count daily. Note: It will gross you out. Repeat this process as often as needed and don’t be fooled that they are totally gone as it takes 8 to 10 days for their eggs to hatch and the problem will repeat itself. 

When the solution seems to be getting thick, I have added just a small amount of water to extend it for another day or two. Especially if I were short on time but want to keep my kitchen and home nat free.

In the meantime:

  • Clean your drains, sinks and counters with rubbing alcohol. 
  • Follow up with a pipe flush using baking soda and white vinegar.  
  • Make sure there isn’t any standing water or fruits that will draw in these pest, because they multiply like mosquitoes and spread germs.
  • Burn some incense if you like, the fruit fly needs fresh air and smoke of any kind kills them.

I hope these tips and tricks help you maintain your sanity when bugs want to claim your home. 

Whatever you do, try to go natural. The chemicals that are on the market are lethal to bugs but also to you, your pets and your loved ones.
