Pepsi Admits Their Soda Causes This Shocking Disease

When the Center for Environmental Health released test results showing that Pepsi intentionally covered up the presence of high levels of 4-Mel in its popular soft drinks in 2013, the company denied both the presence of this chemical in its beverages and the fact that it was dangerous.

4-Mel, which is short for 4-Methylimidazole, is a compound that is formed in the manufacturing of caramel coloring, and is a known carcinogen.

Since then, the drinks maker has fought against complying with California state requirements to place a cancer warning label on the beverages that contain the ingredient, which include not only Pepsi, but also Diet Pepsi and Pepsi One.

Now, a settlement in a class action lawsuit against Pepsi has gained preliminary approval from a federal judge in California.

As part of the proposed settlement, Pepsi has agreed to ensure its caramel coloring’s 4-Mel levels do not exceed 100 parts per billion in products that are being shipped for sale within the U.S. They will also be required to test the soda using specific protocols.

The soft drink giant also agreed to these measures in a different lawsuit that was settled in a California state court last year.

The new settlement, however, expands the reach of these measures from California to the entire country.

Pepsi failed to warn consumers that its drinks contain known carcinogens

The lawsuit accused Pepsi of failing to warn people that its beverages contain 4-Mel, which California has officially recognized as a cancer-causing chemical.

A 2014 Consumer Reports test showed that the 4-Mel in Pepsi exceeded the permitted level of 29 micrograms per bottle or can, which would mean that they were in violation of common law and consumer protection statutes in the state of California.

In particular, this violates California’s Proposition 65, which has been in place since 1985, and requires manufacturers to provide consumers with clear warnings when their products will expose them to toxic or cancer-causing chemicals.

The state’s Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment set the cutoff at 29 micrograms because that level creates a risk of cancer of one in 100,000.

Citing a 2013 Mintel and Leatherhead Food Research report, Consumer Reports said that caramel coloring is the world’s most widely used food coloring.

At the time, Pepsi tried to say that because Prop 65 refers to exposure per day rather than exposure per can, and that the average amount of diet soda that its drinkers consume daily is less than a can, there was no need to place a warning on it. Consumer Reports disagreed, however.

“No matter how much consumers drink they don’t expect their beverages to have a potential carcinogen in them.

And we don’t think 4-MeI should be in foods at all. Our tests of Coke samples show that it is possible to get to much lower levels,” toxicologist Dr. Urvashi Rangan said.
Is drinking soda really worth risking cancer and obesity?

It simply does not make sense for people to expose themselves unnecessarily to an ingredient that merely serves to color their food, and consumers have the right to be aware of what they are putting in their bodies.

The cancer-causing caramel coloring in Pepsi is not the only reason consumers should steer clear of it.

Soft drinks are also believed to be behind the nation’s obesity epidemic. A UCLA study found that adults who consumed one sugary drink such as a soda every day had a 27 percent higher likelihood of being classified as overweight than those who did not drink such beverages.

Moreover, drinking just one soda each day adds up to a total of 39 pounds of sugar each year!

That means that regular soda drinkers can cut their risk of obesity and cancer in one fell swoop simply by giving up the habit for good.

Study Finds Diet Soda/Drinks Triple your Risk of Stroke and Dementia

To shed weight and appear trim, millions of people around the globe indulge in diet drinks which are predominantly sweetened with aspartame, an established neurotoxin. Though the effects of aspartame are widely known and keep some people from consuming “diet” beverages, only recently have researchers confirmed that sipping diet fizzy drinks daily increases one’s risk of developing dementia or having a stroke later on in life.

Scientists from Boston University studied almost 4,400 adults to determine the effects of drinking full sugar vs diet drinks, and concluded that adults who have one diet drink a day are three times more at risk to suffer a stroke or dementia. Reportedly, no connection was made between the sugary beverages and either of the illnesses, but the researchers don’t recommend those be ingested, either.

The study was conducted for ten years. As The Daily Mail reports, the team concluded that adults who had one or more diet drink a day were 2.9 times more likely to develop dementia and 3 times more at risk of strokes, compared to those who consumed virtually none. Said Matthew Pase, a senior fellow in the department of neurology at Boston University School of Medicine,

“Our study shows a need to put more research into this area given how often people drink artificially sweetened beverages. Although we did not find an association between stroke or dementia and the consumption of sugary drinks, this certainly does not mean they are a healthy option.”

“We recommend that people drink water on a regular basis instead of sugary or artificially sweetened beverages,” Pase added.

The researchers believe artificial sweeteners, including aspartame and saccharine, affect the blood vessels which eventually trigger strokes and dementia. This is concerning, as diet drinks account for approximately 25% of the beverages on the market. In result of the findings, the team now urges healthcare professionals to stop promoting diet drinks as suitable beverages for those who desire to get healthy or consume fewer calories to lose weight.

This finding mirrors previous research conducted by Imperial College in London. Published in the American Heart Association’s journal Stroke, the study followed 4,372 adults over the age of 45. Each filled out a questionnaire about their daily food and drink intake in the 1990’s, and then for ten years, were assessed healthwise. The researchers concluded that diet drinks are no better at aiding weight loss than full fat drinks.

In regards to the latest research, Dr. Rosa Sancho, Head of Research at Alzheimer’s Research UK, said:

As people are becoming more aware of the consequences of a high-sugar diet, many are turning to artificially-sweetened diet fizzy drinks as an alternative to those with lots of sugar. Future studies will need to confirm these findings in other groups of people, and explore what might be underlying any link between artificially-sweetened soft drinks and dementia.”

Gavin Partington, director-general of the British Soft Drinks Association, disagrees with the empirical data. He commented on the finding,

Despite their claims, the authors of this observational study admit they found no cause and effect and provide no science-based evidence whatsoever to support their theories. In fact, based on the evidence, Public Health England is actively encouraging food and drink companies to use low-calorie sweeteners as an alternative to sugar and help people manage their weight.”

What Is Rosemary Oil?

Related to mint and looking like lavender, rosemary has leaves like flat pine needles touched with silver. It derives its name from Latin words ros (“dew”) and marinus (“sea”), or “dew of the sea.”

The Virgin Mary is said to have spread her blue cloak over a rosemary bush as she rested, and the white flowers turned blue. The shrub came to be known as the “Rose of Mary.”

Rosemary was considered sacred by the Egyptians, Hebrews, Greeks, and Romans, and was used in the Middle Ages to ward off evil spirits and protect against the plague. Rosemary oil has a clear, refreshing herbal smell, is clear in color, and is watery in viscosity. It is extracted from the fresh flowering tops through steam distillation, yielding 1 to 2 percent.

Its health benefits made it a favorite of Paracelsus, a German-Swiss physician and botanist who contributed greatly to the understanding of herbal medicine in the 16th century. He valued rosemary oil because of its entire body-strengthening ability, such as the healing of sensitive organs like the liver, heart, and brain.
Uses of Rosemary Oil

You can use fresh rosemary-infused oil on your salads as a delicious dressing. The herb itself has a thousand uses, and it extremely hardy and therefore easy to grow and maintain whether inside or out. You can add an entire sprig to your soups for a unique flavor. According to Modern Essentials, a guide to the therapeutic uses of essential oils, high-quality rosemary oil has analgesic, antibacterial, anticancer, anticatarrhal, antifungal, anti-infection, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and expectorant properties.

The book’s A-Z list of rosemary oil uses covers many health concerns, including for the following:

Clarity – Add a drop to your hands, rub together, and cup over your mouth and nose for up to a minute

Cough
– Massage one to two drops over your chest and throat every few hours

Headaches
– Add a drop to your hands, and cup over your mouth and nose for up to a minute. You may also apply a drop topically to the aching parts of your head.

Learning and memory
– Diffuse the oil throughout the room, inhale directly from the bottle, rub over your temples, or apply to your toes regularly.

Vaginal infection

Rosemary oil can also be used on your pets as a hair growth stimulant and for helping produce shiny coats.

This essential oil is a disinfectant and is often used as a mouthwash, helping remove bad breath. By removing oral bacteria, rosemary oil can prevent cavities, plaque buildup, and other dental issues. The mesmerizing aroma of rosemary is worth noting, too, making it an excellent inhalant.

Rosemary oil is used in candles, perfumes, bath oils, fresheners, and cosmetics, boosting mental energy when inhaled. Used with 50:50 dilution, rosemary oil can be applied on ankles and wrists (two to four drops), applied to chakras or vitaflex points, directly inhaled, diffused, or as an dietary supplement.

Composition of Rosemary Oil

The main chemical components of rosemary oil include a-pinene, borneol, b-pinene, camphor, bornyl acetate, camphene, 1,8-cineole, and limonene. A study published in Chemistry of Natural Compounds looked at the volatile compounds obtained from the essential oil of rosemary cultivated at the Algerian Sahara.

Its analysis found that 30 compounds represented 98.2 percent of the essential oil, with 1,8-cineole (29.5 percent), 2-ethyl-4,5-dimethylphenol (12 percent) and camphor (11.5 percent) as the major components.

Benefits of Rosemary Oil

1. Indigestion – Rosemary oil is often used for relieving flatulence, stomach cramps, constipation, and bloating. The essential oil is also deemed helpful in stimulating appetite. Research shows that rosemary essential oil can help detoxify the liver and help regulate the creation and release of bile, a key part of the digestive process.

2. Stress relief – Aside from its aromatheraupeutic benefits, rosemary oil is seen to decrease the level of cortisol, one of the hormones released during the body’s flight-or-flight response to stress, in the saliva. According to the 2007 study, inhaling rosemary and lavender oils for five minutes significantly reduced cortisol levels in the subjects’ saliva, potentially decreasing the dangers of chronic stress.

3. Pain relief – Rosemary essential oil is promoted for its ability to relieve pain, which is why it’s widely used in treating headaches, muscle pains, and even arthritis. Massage the affected area with the essential oil, which you can also add to vapor baths for the treatment of rheumatism. Its anti-inflammatory qualities make it a good way to address pain from sprains and joint aches.

4. Immune system boost – The same 2007 study that found reduced cortisol levels after simultaneous massage and inhalation of rosemary essential oil found that the free radical-scavenging activity in the subjects’ bodies also significantly increased. Antioxidants are a valuable weapon to fight off infection and disease, so this benefit of rosemary oil is welcome news — regularly using or inhaling it can support your immunity and help you fight off diseases linked to free radicals.

5. Respiratory problems – The scent of the oil has been shown to provide relief from throat congestion, and in treating respiratory allergies, colds, sore throat, and the flu. Its antiseptic action also makes rosemary oil useful for respiratory infections. Because of its antispasmodic effect, it is also used in certain treatment programs for bronchial asthma.

Rosemary oil also appears to work wonders on anxiety. A study published in Holistic Nursing Practice in 2009 found that the use of sachets containing lavender and rosemary essential oils helped reduce anxiety associated with test-taking.

Using this essential oil seems to benefit brain health, too. A 2003 study published in the International Journal of Neuroscience, which involved 144 volunteers, found that rosemary oil helped improve mood in healthy adults. There is also a positive effect proposed for Alzheimer’s patients — a small study in 2009 found that one month of aromatherapy involving rosemary, lemon, lavender, and orange essential oils helped enhanced cognitive function, especially in Alzheimer’s patients.
How to Make Rosemary Oil

The versatility of rosemary essential oil makes is so widely used in aromatherapy as an aroma in many combinations. It blends well with oils like lavender, frankincense, clary sage, basil, thyme, citronella, lemongrass, chamomile, and peppermint.

You can make your own rosemary-infused oil by placing a sprig or two of completely dry rosemary leaves into a glass jar, topping with olive oil, replacing the lid, and shaking lightly. Store it in a warm, dark place for two weeks. Strain and simply pour back into the glass jar. Use one-fourth for a fragrant bath, or blend with balsamic vinegar to drizzle as a tasty dressing over salads.

How Does Rosemary Oil Work?

To help address body circulation, mental fatigue, pain relief, decongestion of the respiratory tract, and as a skin and hair care agent, you can use rosemary oil several ways, including in burners and vaporizers, blended massage oils or in the bath, creams, lotions, and shampoos. As a general guideline, I advise adding two to three drops of rosemary essential oil to your bath water. Is Rosemary Oil Safe?

Rosemary oil appears to be a safe, effective essential oil for a litany of uses and purposes. Before using it topically, I advise you to dilute it in a carrier oil, as there is a risk of contact sensitivity. Do a skin patch test first.

Pregnant and breastfeeding women should avoid using rosemary essential oil during their pregnancy. Furthermore, consult a doctor first before administering the herbal oil to children. Self-treatment of a chronic disease, such as depression or Alzheimer’s, using rosemary oil may also hold serious consequences without professional advice.

Side Effects of Rosemary Oil

At times, rosemary oil may also cause allergic reactions, so consult your doctor for proper use. It is volatile in nature, which means it can cause vomiting an spams. Therefore, do not ingest it. Again, it is strongly recommended for pregnant and breastfeeding women to avoid using rosemary essential oil, as it can affect the fetus or lead to miscarriage.

Regular low doses of THC dramatically boosted memory and learning in older mice, say scientists, who plan a clinical trial in humans later this year.

Researchers have come up with an unusual proposal to slow, or even reverse, the cognitive decline that comes with old age: small, daily doses of cannabis extract.

The idea emerged from tests on mice which found that regular, low doses of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) – the main psychoactive ingredient in cannabis – impaired memory and learning in young animals, but boosted the performance of old ones.

The discovery has raised hopes for a treatment that improves brain function in old age without inducing the behavioural effects well known to recreational users of the drug. To investigate whether it works in humans, the scientists plan to launch a clinical trial later this year.

“If we can rejuvenate the brain so that everybody gets five to 10 more years without needing extra care then that is more than we could have imagined,” said Andras Bilkei-Gorzo at the University of Bonn.

Research on cannabis use by adolescents has found compelling evidence that regular, heavy use can impair the memory. But the impact of the drug on older people’s brains has been far less well studied.

Writing in the journal Nature Medicine, the scientists describe how they gave a month-long course of daily THC to mice aged two months, one year, and 18 months. The mice were then tested to see how fast they solved a water maze, and how quickly they recognised familiar objects such as mice they had met before.

Without the drug, the younger mice aced the tests, while the older ones struggled. But infusions of THC had a dramatic impact on both groups. The performance of the younger mice plummeted on THC, while older mice improved so much that their scores matched those of healthy drug-free young mice. The benefits lasted for weeks after the infusions ended. None of the mice displayed the strange effects one might expect from doses of THC.

“These results reveal a profound, long-lasting improvement of cognitive performance resulting from a low dose of THC treatment in mature and old animals,” the scientists write. The boost in brain function was linked to an apparent restoration of gene expression in the brain to more youthful levels.

The German team believes that the drug works by stimulating what is known as the endocannabinoid system, a biochemical pathway that becomes less active with age in mice, humans and other animals. “I’m sure that what we are seeing are the long-term consequences of normalising the system,” Bilkei-Gorzo said.

David Nutt, the former government drugs adviser and professor of neuropsychopharmacology at Imperial College London, said he was not surprised at the potential for THC to improve memory in old age. “The key question now is does the same apply to humans? Clearly this needs to be tested, but it will not be possible in the UK due to the ridiculous restrictions on cannabis research occasioned by its being a schedule 1 drug.”

Michael Bloomfield, a clinical lecturer in psychiatry at University College London said: “What is particularly exciting about this research is that it opens up a whole new chemical system, the endocannabinoid system, as a potential target for new avenues of research, which could include illnesses like dementia.

“However, we are still in very early days and further research is needed,” he said. THC produces complicated and sometimes apparently opposite effects depending on the dose, the age of the person taking it, and how often the drug is administered, he warned. “This means that the possibility of doctors potentially prescribing cannabis, THC or similar compounds for memory problems in older people is still a long way off,” he added.
